Downtown Revitalization
Growing the Businesses You Have: Business Retention Strategies

Download the Jacksonville Guidebook Here

Downtown revitalizers often focus on recruiting new businesses while existing businesses languish. Even with recruitment success, downtown can become a revolving door of retailers and restaurants without a strong emphasis on retaining and growing the businesses you already have. This workshop focuses on how downtown businesses can compete, grow, and if necessary, reinvent themselves to succeed on Main Street. Both retail shops and food and beverage outlets will be discussed. Some of the questions

that will be answered include:

  • Who is competing with your downtown businesses and what can you do about it?
  • Are your downtown businesses hurting or helping themselves?
  • What makes a downtown business successful?
  • What strategies work for assisting downtown businesses?
  • How can tired businesses and vacant storefronts be revived?

The seminar will be led by:
Lyn Falk, Founder and Owner, Retailworks, Mequon, WI. Lyn Falk is an author, designer, business owner and educator who has helped retailers prosper for over 30 years. She is an expert in store design, business, and consumer psychology. Lyn has worked with over 45 Main Street communities and with over 35 different types of retailers.

Bambi Grajek-Specter, Consultant, Milwaukee, WI. Bambi is an expert in business operations, customer service and staff development. She has experience in store management, the operation of over 10 gourmet coffee shops/cafes and was co-owner of a deli/bakery café.

This seminar is presented by Illinois Main Street , The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, & The Center for Governmental Studies at Northern Illinois University
